When it comes to their children’s education many parents are faced with the dilemma – what do you do if your child struggles with a particular subject at school? What can you do to help them, and how can tutoring help?

Rockdale Coaching College was established in 1991, and their friendly and experienced tutors have helped hundreds of students achieve academic success and accomplish their goals. In small groups and with a focus on individual students, they work with students across the board from Years 3 to 12.

Rockdale Coaching College is proud that not long ago a renowned English head teacher Mr. Nick Boskovski joined them to help students with tutoring in English.

We reached out to Mr. Boskovski to find out more about his story and share his achievements in the hope to inspire future students of all backgrounds.

Mr. Boskovski migrated from Macedonia in 1978 at 18 months of age with his parents, speaking Macedonian as his first language. “I started school not being able to speak English and my mother said the first word I learnt was pencil. I have lived in the Inner West all my life”, adds Mr. Boskovski.

Mr. Boskovski you are an English Head Teacher, given your parents are of Macedonian background, how did you achieve this?

Coming from a Macedonian background and having parents that were not that confident with English meant that I had to learn how to read, write and speak English. Attending a local school which was quite multicultural at the time I found that literature gave me a window into other cultures which I found fascinating.

Reflecting on high school I noticed that nearly all my English teachers were Anglo Saxon and taught, in part, traditionally. I thought there is so much more to English than and believed I could offer more in terms of literature contributing to humanities way of thinking and how this thinking has contributed to who we are.

Becoming the Head teacher at MCK kind of evolved from some of the good work I had being doing over the years. For example, achieving state ranking in both Standard and Extension English and receiving numerous band 6’s in Standard, Advanced and Extension equivalent E4’s.

English is not an easy subject to learn, what help is there for a student that is not doing well in that subject?

Beside the technical elements which require some complex learning, students of English need to consider the message in terms of what, why, and how it is being delivered and the context behind what is being said. This applies to any culture and language so the skills in understanding English are transferable. The context is what generally differs in some way considering place and time.

Can tutoring lessons help or is a waste of money and time?

Tutoring helps as long as you are working on the technical components of the subject. That is how and why you are supposed to write and what exactly you are supposed to extract from a text when responding.

What can student get from tutoring lessons?

Students can develop an understanding and awareness of individual learning and develop the tools to become critical thinkers allowing them to ironically become independent learners. That is, students can eventually learn how to learn.

When should parents think about enrolling their child in tutoring?

Parents should consider tutoring when either their child asks for extra help or when parents can see there may be an issue with learning and a conversation is had with the child about tutoring. Or if they just want that academic advantage.
